The castle might have been built during the Punic period but of this culture the only remains that have been found is ceramic.Remains of a Roman fortress have been found here.Even though it would be during the Nazarite period when it became important, famous for its prison and dungeon.In it there were imprisoned some dethroned Sultans, Ministers fallen into disgrace, or military heads.The fortress was given to the Catholic Monarchs by Caid Ibn al-Hay.. In 1808, it was bombarded by an English fleet.Of note Inside the castle is the Neoclassic pavilion that has no connection whatsoever with the rest of the building.
